Journaling: Connections can be astounding when you look at the overall framework of life. I made this cross stitched picture of a black lab for Pete when he was away from 4-Wing Cold Lake, “on course” in St. Louis, Missouri for 9 weeks. I had just moved to Alberta to be with him & was working as a pediatric RN. I worked my shifts & cross-stitched when I was off to help pass the time while he was away. We knew we’d soon be moving in together & he would have to leave Shady, the black lab he shared with Gil, his roommate, behind. The picture had been stitched with this passage in mind.
When I went to Edmonton to meet Pete’s plane, I gave him the framed picture, which I had toted along with me. The cross stitched lab pup hung in our home when we moved in together a few months before our wedding in 1992.
...Fasssssst forward to 2010… to Nova Scotia, near 14-Wing Greenwood. An Autism Assistance Dog Guide (AADG) named Argo joined our family to help our little boy, Noah, the youngest of our four kids, who had Autism Spectrum Disorder. The cross stitch picture was Argo to a “T.” The black lab pup in the cross-stitch even had what looked to be some brindle colouring like Argo! That colouring is somewhat of a rarity in the breed, but the head AADG trainer at the Lions Foundation of Canada (LFC) told us that it did show up at times in the LFC’s breeding program.
It’s fitting that I had been drawn to creating that cross stitch so long before we were married & had 4 kids, including a little guy with special needs who would need a dog like Argo- the dog in the cross-stitch. The picture I had cross stitched 18 years before was a pup who could have been Argo.
Love you, Pete. Love you, Noah. Love you, Argo.
That cross stitch is now hanging in the entryway of our home, & there it will stay.
